The tiny speck of vanilla bean seed lingers, you might even find one, with a delicate, dreamy French-style vanilla scent.
The gorgeous vanilla orchid bloom lasts only one day and must be pollinated within twelve hours in order to grow a bean. Vanilla grown in South America gets a helping hand from the Melipona bee. In Madagascar and other areas, pollination must be done by hand.
In the 1800s, Réunion Island twelve-year-old Edmund Alibis figured out how to pollinate the orchids by hand, leading to a revolution in non-native vanilla production.
Vanilla beans take nine months to mature. After picking, the beans are briefly dunked in boiling water to develop the vanillin. The bean is then carefully dried for more than 30 days and massaged for further flavour development.
Storage & Shelf Life
Both sunlight and indoor lighting are lip balm's biggest nemesis and will degrade oils quickly. For optimal balm preservation, store in a dark, cool place between 60–70°F. Use within 12 months of opening for best quality.
